I Am Proud of the Promise I Made in 2011 to My Best Friend.
Over July 4th to July 5th 2011, I lost my best friend to ovarian cancer.
Before she died, I made her a promise. Be as healthy as I could be. Live life to the fullest. Go to concerts. Do what I enjoy. Create things. Leave a good impact on everyone I know.
That promise has been running underneath everything I’ve built for fifteen years now. It’s not a New Year’s resolution. It’s not a mood. It’s the reason I don’t quit.
Here’s what I’m proud of today, on this side of that promise.
I’m proud that I live in a country where nobody can tell me I’m not allowed to keep it. No one gets to decide my health journey is finished, or that I’m too old to start over, or that grief has to be the end of the story instead of the reason for the next one. I get to choose. Every single day.
I’m proud that I get to dance in the aisle at a concert, cold brew in hand, and nobody stops me.
I’m proud that Tom and I get to plan a cruise for September 2027, ghost hunt on the weekends, sit through township committee meetings, and go to church on Sundays, all in the same life. Nobody assigns me one identity and makes me pick.
I’m proud that I get to lose the weight slowly, the right way, without anyone selling me a shortcut and calling it freedom. The real freedom is that I get to take the time it actually takes.
I’m proud that keeping a promise to someone I loved is still mine to keep. Nobody inherited it from me. Nobody gets to close that chapter but me.
Every pound I lose is a promise kept. Every concert. Every adventure with Tom. Every ghost hunt. Every person I help believe in themselves again.
She is the mission underneath everything. She is why I don’t quit.
And I’m proud, every day, that I live somewhere that lets me keep going.
